The history of Aluna
Aluna comes from the greek Helena meaning “shining light” and the Latin Luna, “the moon”.
Once you have experienced the beautiful moonlight in Nungwi, you will understand why Aluna is the perfect name!
Aluna is a newly renovated holiday accommodation at the most northerly point of the island in Nungwi, near the lighthouse. From Aluna it is a short stroll to the sea where you can enjoy miles and miles of beautiful white beaches and the crystal-clear water of the Indian ocean.
Located just outside the centre of Nungwi it is a calm haven where you can enjoy the beautiful swimming pool and relax on one of the sundecks or chill out in the exotic garden, whilst lively nightlife from Nungwi can be discovered after only a 15-minute walk along the beach.
Dreams can come true
In January 2017 Roland visited Zanzibar for the first time and immediately fell in love with the island and its culture. He wanted to create some positive commotion in this part of Nungwi and started to look for a way to make that dream come true.
When a lovely small B&B in Nungwi turned out to be up for sale he was immediately convinced of this charming place. In May 2017 he took over the previously called Anita’s Bed and Breakfast and renamed it Aluna.
We are looking forward for you to see and enjoy!
Newly Renovated Lodge
In May 2018 the first swimming pool was created, well integrated in the centre of the garden and with its turquoise water, shallow jacuzzi part, and night-lightening a real eye-catcher and joyful pleasure!
Our 10 new rooms (some with private jacuzzi and outside tropical showers) and extra swimming pool, finished beginning of 2019, are the cherry on top.
Aluna’s lovely spacious garden is a green oasis of flowers, trees and soft white beach sand where you will find comfortable lounge sets, deck chairs and hammocks offering sunny and shady places to sit down for a drink, read a book or just relax.
The makuti-roofed upstairs lounge area offers lovely views to the beach, ocean and the famous nearby lighthouse. At the roof terrace you can enjoy breakfast or order a refreshing cold drink or smoothie at the bar.
You will feel right at home at our cosy, small-scale lodge. Our staff will welcome you with a great Zanzibarian hospitality making sure you get into the holiday spirit the minute you arrive.
Relax to the max
We recently opened our massage and beauty corner where you can enjoy different types of massages, hair braiding, henna etc. You can book at the reception desk and fully enjoy a well deserved treatment!
We have two massage tables, thus offer the perfect location for a couples massage.
Send us an email in case of any questions or price request of the different treatments.
Feel at home
Weekly we offer the opportunity to get to know the other guests. Barbecue dinners and shared grilled fish buffets with live music are no exception.
Our priority is that our guests feel like coming home and be part of the ever growing Aluna family.
Hope to meet you soon… “under the moon” at Aluna!
Caroline and Tom
Caroline is from the Flemish part of Belgium. Tom was born in Tanzania and raised in the Netherlands. Their positive attitude will not go unnoticed during your stay!
Roland is living in the Netherlands but is at Aluna a couple of times a year. Yet he is always around since he is responsible for the amazing gardens and starting up Aluna.
Because Aluna would not be Aluna without their smiling and friendly faces all around. They will always be of assistance and are looking forward to meet you!
